Easy Instant Pot Bolognese Sauce with Frozen Ground Beef
We are all short on time these days and sometimes forget to thaw out the meat for dinner. This will help you get a tasty dinner on the table in no time at all starting with frozen ground beef or ground turkey.
Equipment
- Potato Masher or ground meat chopper
Ingredients
- 1 lb frozen ground beef or turkey lean is best if you have it
- 2 cans seasoned diced tomatoes oregano, basil, garlic (do not drain) 14 oz each
- 1 tsp garlic salt
- 1 T butter optional but adds a rich flavor
- 1 lb dry pasta cooked according to package directions in a separate pot
Instructions
- To your pot add 2 (14oz) cans of seasoned diced tomatoes (If it isn't pre-seasoned go ahead and season to your liking adding your own dried basil, oregano, and garlic). Note: Since someone has asked, you DO NOT drain the tomatoes, you add all of the liquid as well. The pot will need this liquid to come to pressure.
- Place trivet in bottom of pot and set your frozen ground meat on top. Sprinkle garlic salt on top of frozen meat.
- Set pot for 5 min High Pressure. When it beeps do a QR. (It's ground meat so you don't need to worry about the NPR.)
- Remove trivet and break up partially cooked meat (a potato masher or one of those ground beef choppers works well for this).
- Put lid back on pot and cook for 3 min. and 10 NPR.
- Add butter for a richer flavor.
- Pour sauce over hot pasta and serve with parmesan cheese if desired.

This shortcut recipe for a quick and meaty bolognese sauce is so easy. You can also substitute a leaner option of ground turkey.
How Long Do I Need to Cook This?
Your cooking time will depend on the shape and thickness of the frozen meat. Flat and square or rectangle-shaped only takes about 5 min to cook halfway through. If you have a thick, round chub, then it takes about 12 minutes to cook halfway through. This recipe calls for a QR and typically we want to NPR for meat. However, this rule changes for ground meat. Ground meat won’t tighten up or get tough when you use a QR. So, go ahead and speed this recipe up by using a Quick Release method.
