Hamburger Gravy

  • 1 1/2 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 tsp Seasoned Salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 Tbsp Better than Bouillon Beef
  • 2 cups half n half
  • 2-3 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 2-3 Tbsp water for your slurry

Pot in Pot Instant Mashed Potatoes (Hungry Jack 6 serving recipe)

  • 2 cups potato flakes
  • 1 3/4 cups water
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 Tbsp butter

Instructions

Pot in Pot Mashed Potatoes

  • In a 7x3 inch cake pan or one of your stacker pans, add potato flakes, water, milk, and salt. Stir to incorporate and add dollops of butter on top. Set this aside.

Instant Pot Hamburger Gravy

  • Start by turning your pot on Sauté and waiting for the pot to say Hot. When your pot reaches temperature and says Hot, add your ground beef and start browning your meat.
  • As your meat is browning, you can add your seasoned salt. Keep stirring and breaking up your ground beef. Don't worry about cooking it until it's completely done, you are still going to pressure cook it.
  • Add 1/2 cup water and your Beef Better Than Bouillon and stir to incorporate.
  • Turn off Sauté by pressing Cancel and place your tall trivet in the pot over the ground beef mixture and place your uncovered pan with prepped mashed potatoes on top.
  • Close your lid and set your valve to Sealing if necessary. Set pot to Pressure Cook or Manual for 4 min.
  • When the 4 min countdown is done, you may QR and release the pressure. Carefully open the pot and remove your potato pan and tall trivet.

Finishing the Gravy

  • Press Cancel and carefully add in 2 cups of half and half (you can use milk too if you want). Prepare a cornstarch slurry, about 3 Tbsp of cornstarch and 3 Tbsp of water should do it. Mix that up and pour into the meat mixture.
  • Press Sauté and heat up your half n half stirring until mixture has thickened.
  • Serve with gravy mixture over potatoes and enjoy!

Notes

Tip: If you are using a different brand of instant mashed potatoes, you should use the preparation measurements for 6 servings on the package.
Real Potatoes: If you choose to do real potatoes instead, you will need a steamer basket or lotus steamer and a high trivet. Peel and dice your potatoes into 1 inch pieces. Increase cooking time to 6 min and QR. Remove your steamer basket and trivet. Proceed with recipe as written and prepare your mashed potatoes as you normally would.

Dinner doesn’t need to be complicated. It can be super easy! I didn’t even have a recipe for this to start with, just a childhood memory and basic ingredients. I also proofed my frozen Rhodes Texas Rolls in the pot right before dinner and got those baking in the oven while I prepared the rest in the pot.
